Where is Praia da Rocha

Praia da Rocha is in the southern part of the municipality of Portimão, next to the mouth of the Arade river, on the western Algarve coast. It is a few minutes by car from the centre of Portimão and makes a good base for exploring the coast between Lagos and Carvoeiro.

Location: View on map (approximate coordinates: 37.1167, -8.5333).

What makes it special

The beach is large and lined with cliffs that drop sheer to the sand, with rock formations that erosion has shaped into forms reminiscent of castles or pyramids. At one end stands the Fort of Santa Catarina, from the 17th century, built to defend the entrance to the Arade river. Unlike many more secluded beaches, here you also find a marina, restaurants, bars and nightlife.

Getting there and parking

You reach it by car through Portimão, following the signs for Praia da Rocha. There is parking in the town area and near the beach, but in July and August it fills up quickly and may be paid, so arrive early or leave the car a little further away. Access paths and stairs lead down from the top of the cliffs to the sand.

Best time to visit

In high summer the beach fills up and the area buzzes, which is great if you want a lively atmosphere. If you prefer more peace and quiet, choose June, September or early autumn, with pleasant temperatures, fewer people and beautiful late-afternoon light on the cliffs.
