Portimão: the marina, the Arade river and the way to Praia da Rocha
Portimão is one of the largest towns in the Algarve and grew up beside the Arade river, with a life tied to the sea that shows both along the riverside and in nearby Praia da Rocha.
The riverside
The avenue along the Arade river, with the municipal market and the old canning warehouses, is the best place to feel Portimão’s history as a fishing port. By late afternoon it fills with people strolling by the water.
The marina
Closer to the river mouth, Portimão’s marina brings together leisure boats, shops and restaurants, and is also the starting point for several boat trips along the coast, including to the caves of Benagil and Ponta da Piedade.

Praia da Rocha
Praia da Rocha is a few minutes from the centre and one of the best-known beaches in the Algarve, with rock formations beside a wide stretch of sand and a 17th-century fort at one end. It is a natural extension of Portimão for anyone wanting a beach after visiting the town.
Food in the area
Portimão is known for grilled sardines, a tradition tied to the town’s old canning industry, served especially on festival days and on terraces by the river. Grilled fish in general remains the backbone of the local kitchen.

Getting there and parking
Portimão has a train station and is well connected by motorway to the rest of the Algarve. There are car parks near the market and the marina; at Praia da Rocha, parking by the sand fills up quickly in summer.
Best time to visit
Spring and autumn bring pleasant temperatures for walking along the river and visiting the town; in summer, the riverside and Praia da Rocha are among the liveliest spots in the Algarve.

Where to stay and what to book
Portimão is a good base thanks to its central location and quick connections to other beaches in the central Algarve. To find accommodation and experiences in the region, such as boat trips along the coast, visit Algarve Férias, and to see the ratings of homes and experiences, Algarve Reviews.
