A day at Praia de Odeceixe: what to do, what to bring, how to get there

Praia de Odeceixe lies at the northern edge of the Aljezur municipality, where the Seixe stream meets the sea and the Algarve gives way to the Alentejo. It has a sandy beach between schist cliffs, with both sea and river bathing, and works for a full beach day as well as a walk. Here is what to do, what to bring and how to get there.

Where is Praia de Odeceixe

Praia de Odeceixe sits at the northern edge of the Aljezur municipality, a few kilometres from the village of Odeceixe, by the mouth of the Seixe stream, which marks the natural border with the Alentejo. It is on the Costa Vicentina, inside the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park. You reach it by the municipal road that links National Road 120 to the beach.

Location: View on map (approximate coordinates: 37.4422, -8.7978).

What makes it special

It is a beach with two faces: on one side the open Atlantic, on the other the mouth of the stream, where the water is usually calmer. The sand is tucked between tall schist and greywacke cliffs, which shelter several bird species. The river mouth and the sand change with the tides and through the year, so the scenery is never exactly the same.

Getting there and parking

There is a road to the beach and parking nearby. The sand is reached by a ramp and steps. There are toilets, waste collection and a beach bar, and lifeguards are on duty during the bathing season. In summer the car park can fill up, so it is best to arrive early and check the available services on the spot.

Best time to visit

Summer is the liveliest time, with lifeguards and services running, but it is also the busiest; early morning or late afternoon is quieter. In spring and autumn the light is softer and walking is more pleasant. The Atlantic is cool all year round and, when the sea is rough, waves and currents can be strong.

What to do nearby

  • Sea and river swimming: switch between the Atlantic waves and the calmer water near the mouth of the stream.
  • Surf, bodyboard and paddle: the waves open to the ocean attract surfers and bodyboarders, and some people try stand-up paddling and kayaking around the river mouth.
  • Rota Vicentina: trails such as the Fishermen’s Trail pass through the area, with views over the cliffs and the sea.
  • Odeceixe village: a few minutes from the beach, with its windmill, cafés and restaurants.

Quick tips before you go

  • Bring water, sunscreen and a hat.
  • Before you go in, check the flag and the lifeguards’ advice: the sea is open and can have strong waves and currents, and near the river mouth the water and sand shift with the tides.
  • Bring water, sun cream, a hat, a towel, a light jacket for late afternoon and comfortable shoes if you want to walk.
  • Take your rubbish with you, respect the vegetation and keep away from the base and the edge of the cliffs, which can be at risk of collapse.
