Praia da Marinha: complete guide to one of the most beautiful beaches in the Algarve
If there is one beach that appears on every list of the most beautiful in the Algarve, it is Praia da Marinha. It sits in the municipality of Lagoa, near Carvoeiro, and brings together everything you expect from an Algarve postcard: golden cliffs, caves, rock formations rising out of the water and a crystal-clear sea. In this guide you will find out how to get there, when to go and what to do nearby.

Where is Praia da Marinha
Praia da Marinha is on the western (barlavento) Algarve coast, in the municipality of Lagoa, between Carvoeiro and Armação de Pêra. It is a few minutes by car from Carvoeiro and about half an hour from Portimão and Albufeira, which makes it a good base for a day trip from anywhere on the central coast.
Location: View on map (approximate coordinates: 37.0897, -8.412).
What makes it special
The beach itself is relatively small, but the setting is spectacular. The limestone cliffs, in golden and orange tones, have been sculpted by the sea over thousands of years into arches, caves and small islets rising from the water. At low tide you can explore nooks that disappear when the tide comes in. The water is clear and ideal for snorkelling, but usually cool, as along the whole Atlantic coast.
Getting there and parking
By car, well-signposted municipal roads lead to the beach from Carvoeiro or the EN125. There is a car park near the access area, but in July and August it fills up early. The tip is simple: arrive in the morning, before 10am, or late in the afternoon. A staircase leads from the upper area down to the sand, so wear comfortable shoes and keep in mind that the way back is uphill.
Best time to visit
In high summer the beach fills up quickly. June and September are ideal: long days, pleasant temperatures and far fewer people. Outside the bathing season, the late-afternoon light on the cliffs is among the best for photography, although there is not always a lifeguard on the beach, so always check sea conditions before going into the water.

What to do besides the beach
- Seven Hanging Valleys Trail: one of the best-known walking trails in the Algarve, following the top of the cliffs between Praia da Marinha and the Vale Centeanes area in Carvoeiro. Bring water and a hat, and avoid the hottest hours.
- Boat and kayak trips: from Carvoeiro and Portimão there are departures to explore caves and coves that can only be seen from the sea.
- Algar Seco: a few kilometres away, with boardwalks and rock formations worth a stop.
- Snorkelling: on calm days, the clear water around the rocks reveals fish and marine life.
Quick tips before you go
- Bring water, sunscreen and shade; there is not much natural shade on the beach.
- Do not go near the edge of the cliffs or sit underneath them, as there is a risk of rockfalls.
- Take your rubbish with you and respect the dune and cliff vegetation.
- Check the beach flag and whether a lifeguard is on duty on the day of your visit.

Frequently asked questions
Is Praia da Marinha good for children? The beach is small and the descent is by stairs, so it suits children who already walk well. At high tide there is less sand available.
Are there restaurants or bars on the beach? The offer on the beach itself is limited. For meals, the most practical option is to head back to Carvoeiro, where there are plenty of fish and seafood restaurants.
How much time should I allow? Half a day is enough for the beach. If you also want to walk the Seven Hanging Valleys trail, plan for the whole day.
