Praia do Amado: surf, sand and what to know before you go

Praia do Amado is one of the best-known beaches on the Costa Vicentina, popular with surfers but also with anyone after a broad stretch of sand and wild scenery. It lies next to Carrapateira, in the municipality of Aljezur, and welcomes surfers and visitors from many countries every year. This guide covers how to get there, when to go and what to expect from the sea.

Where is Praia do Amado

Praia do Amado is about 2 km from the village of Carrapateira, in the municipality of Aljezur, and is the southernmost beach in the municipality. It is part of the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park and sits next to Praia da Bordeira. It is about 20 to 30 minutes by car from Aljezur and Sagres.

What makes it special

It is a long stretch of sand between high cliffs, with an open, lightly developed feel. To the north lies Pontal da Carrapateira, a rocky platform of conservation value. Amado is regarded as one of the best surf spots in Portugal, with varied waves that suit both beginners and those looking for more of a challenge, and it hosts several competitions through the year.

Getting there and parking

Access is easy: a road leads to the beach area, with parking, and you continue on to the sand. There is a beach bar and support facilities, and lifeguards are on duty in the bathing season. In July and August the car park fills up, so it is worth arriving early. As this is a protected area, use only the authorised spaces and avoid wild camping.

Best time to visit

Summer is the busiest time, but Amado has waves for much of the year, so there are surfers even outside the bathing season. For swimming, the bathing season has lifeguard cover; for walking and photography, spring and autumn bring soft light and fewer people. The Atlantic water is cool all year round and, in winter, the sea can be very powerful.
