Silves: the Moorish castle, the cathedral and the Arade river
Silves lies inland in the Algarve, away from the beaches, which makes it a different kind of visit: it was the region’s capital under Islamic rule, and its red sandstone castle still dominates the town from the top of the hill.
The castle and the cathedral
Silves castle, built of red stone, is one of the best preserved in the Algarve, with walls you can walk along, looking out over the town’s rooftops and the Arade river. A few steps away stands the cathedral, a Gothic building raised over a former mosque, which holds tombs attributed to crusaders.
The Arade river
The Arade river runs past the lower town, where the old bridge and a small boat jetty stand. In summer there are boat trips along the river to Portimão, a different way to see the farmland and green banks around Silves.

The citrus orchards
Orange and other citrus orchards spread around Silves, one of the municipality’s trademark sights. In spring, when the trees blossom, the scent carries along the roads leading into town.
Food in the area
Beyond the fish and seafood common to the whole Algarve, Silves has a more inland character, with game dishes and cured meats, and the region’s citrus fruit shows up in sweets and local liqueurs.

Getting there and parking
Silves is about 20 minutes by car from Portimão and has its own train station on the Algarve line. Parking in the lower town, near the bridge, is the most practical option before walking up to the castle.
Best time to visit
Winter and spring bring milder heat for climbing up to the castle and walking the walls; in summer it is worth going earlier or later in the day, as the town has little shade at the hottest hours.

Where to stay and what to book
