Ferragudo Lighthouse (Ponta do Altar): a walk and sunset by the Arade

The Ponta do Altar Lighthouse, in Ferragudo, is at the tip of the coast where the Arade river meets the sea. You can walk there from the village and the route, with views of the river mouth and across it, is one of the most pleasant walks in this part of Portimão and Lagoa.

The route

The walk leaves the village of Ferragudo and follows the coast to the lighthouse, passing local beaches. The channel videos show the way on foot and from the air, which helps you understand the distance and terrain before you go.

Sunset

Late afternoon is the favourite time: golden light over the mouth of the Arade and the sea makes for lovely photos. If you go then, take a torch or your phone for the way back, because the light fades quickly.

Practical tips

Comfortable shoes, water and sun protection. Follow local signs and stay away from the cliff edges.

Nearby

Also see Praia da Rocha and the other beaches on the blog, across the mouth of the Arade.

Frequently asked questions

How much time should I allow? For the Ferragudo lighthouse, allow one to two hours, including the walk back. Photo stops and breaks can make the visit longer.

Is it suitable for children? Yes, but take extra care near the cliffs and steps; small children should always be accompanied.

Do I need to book or pay? Conditions can change with the season and the responsible body. Check on site or with the organisation before you go.

Before you go

Check the weather and sea forecast, bring water, sunscreen and suitable footwear, and respect the environment: take your rubbish back and stay on marked paths. That way the visit is more enjoyable for everyone and safer for you and your family.
