Forte da Ponta da Bandeira, Lagos: the fortress at the harbour entrance
Forte da Ponta da Bandeira is a small fortress at the entrance to Lagos harbour, right next to the marina and the estuary. It was built to defend the city’s access from the sea and today it is an easy stop on a walk around the old town.
What to see
From outside you see the profile of the fort, with its walls and access bridge, and from the top there are views over the marina, the river and the sea. Seen from above in the channel video, the location is very clear: the fortress juts out over the water, next to the boats coming in and out of the harbour.
How to visit
It is a few minutes’ walk from the centre of Lagos along the marina promenade. Opening hours and visiting conditions can vary through the year, so check before you go.
A full outing
The fort combines well with a stroll around the old walls and streets, a break by the marina and then a visit to Ponta da Piedade.
