Loulé: the market, the carnival and inland Algarve

Loulé is an inland Algarve town, away from the beaches but close to everything else: it has one of the region’s best-known markets, an old quarter with traces of Arab-era presence, and it is also the capital of Algarve carnival.

The municipal market

Loulé market, in a building with Arab-Moorish-influenced domes, brings together stalls of fruit, fish, flowers and crafts. It is a good place to feel the town’s rhythm outside the beach season, with vendors who often know their customers by name.

The old quarter

Next to the market, the narrow streets of the old quarter hold traditional houses and the remains of a castle of Arab origin. It is a small area, easy to walk around, with a few viewpoints over the town’s rooftops.

The carnival

Loulé has one of Portugal’s oldest and best-known carnivals, with floats that draw visitors from across the country. Outside that period, the town keeps a calmer pace, tied to trade and crafts.

Inland Loulé

For anyone wanting to step away from the coast, the Loulé municipality rises into hills with small villages, old windmills and trails among cork oaks and strawberry trees. It is a very different landscape from the beach, just minutes away.

Food in the area

Crafts and local products, such as honey, aromatic herbs and cured meats, feature prominently at Loulé market. It is also a good place to try traditional Algarve sweets made with almond and fig.

Getting there and parking

Loulé is about 20 minutes by car from Faro and has good bus connections to other Algarve towns. There are car parks near the market, busier on market days and during carnival.
