Sagres: the fortress, Cape St Vincent and the wind at the edge of the land
Sagres is the south-westernmost tip of the Algarve, and it shows: the wind is stronger, the cliffs higher and the landscape barer than in the rest of the region. For centuries it was linked to the Portuguese Age of Discovery, and today it is also one of Portugal’s surf capitals.
The fortress
The Sagres Fortress sits on a rocky plateau jutting out over the sea, surrounded by sheer cliffs. Inside the grounds there is a chapel and a large open space where, according to tradition, Henry the Navigator gathered pilots and cartographers to plan Portuguese sea voyages.
Cape St Vincent
A few minutes by car away is Cape St Vincent, long considered the south-westernmost point of mainland Europe. The lighthouse, still in operation, marks where the Atlantic meets the Algarve coast, with views that turn dramatic on windy days.

Beaches and surf
The Sagres area has beaches open to the Atlantic, with waves that draw surfers of all levels, and smaller, sheltered coves on the south side, better suited for swimming. There are surf schools in the area for anyone trying it for the first time.
Food in the area
Still a fishing village at heart, Sagres serves plenty of fresh fish and seafood, with lobster and octopus standing out at certain times of year. The constant wind makes this tip of land a good place for a snack on a sheltered terrace.

Getting there and parking
Sagres is about an hour’s drive from Faro and 30 minutes from Lagos, on the national road. There is free parking near the fortress and in the village centre, more limited by the beaches on busier days.
Best time to visit
Spring and autumn bring calmer seas and less strong wind; summer brings more people, mostly linked to surfing, and Cape St Vincent tends to get busier in the late afternoon, for sunset.

Where to stay and what to book
Sagres has mostly small-scale accommodation, aimed at those looking for surf and nature. To find accommodation and experiences in the region, such as surf lessons, visit Algarve Férias, and to see the ratings of homes and experiences, Algarve Reviews.
