Praia da Arrifana: how to get there, where to park and when to go
Praia da Arrifana sits in a small sheltered bay between tall cliffs on the Costa Vicentina, a few kilometres from Aljezur. It is popular with surfers and with anyone who enjoys wild scenery, with the Pedra da Agulha sea stack marking the southern end of the sand. Here you will find out how to get there, where to park and when to go.

Where is Praia da Arrifana
Praia da Arrifana lies next to the small fishing village of the same name, in the municipality of Aljezur, inside the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park. You reach it by the road that leaves the EN 120 just after the southern exit from Aljezur, a drive of only a few kilometres. The village stands on top of the cliff, overlooking the bay.

What makes it special
It is a shell-shaped bay with more than half a kilometre of sand, protected by schist cliffs where endemic plants grow and several bird species nest. At the southern end stands the Pedra da Agulha, a vertical rock rising from the water, and to the north lie the ruins of the Arrifana Fortress. It is one of the best-known surf spots in the region and is also popular with divers.
Getting there and parking
There is parking at the top, next to the village, and the way down to the sand is by a ramp and wooden steps. The climb back up is steep, so wear comfortable footwear. There are toilets and a bar-restaurant, and lifeguards are on duty during the bathing season. In summer the car park can fill up, so it is best to arrive early.
Best time to visit
Summer brings more people and lifeguard cover during the bathing season, while late summer and autumn are a good time for surfing. At high tide the sand becomes very limited and at low tide there is more room, so check the tide times before you go. The Atlantic water is cool and, in winter, the sea can be very powerful.
