Ponta da Piedade, Lagos: cliffs, caves and sea viewpoints

Ponta da Piedade is one of the best-known postcards of the Algarve. It is next to Lagos and brings together golden cliffs, arches and caves carved by the sea, and a lighthouse on top of the cliff. It is a place to look at slowly, both from above, at the viewpoints, and from the water.

What to see

From the top of the cliff you can see rock stacks rising from the water, passages and small coves of very clear water. There are stairways down to the sea and several viewpoints along the way. The channel videos walk the site on foot and show these perspectives well.

When to go

Late-afternoon light gives the rock warm tones and is a very popular time, so it can be busier. Early morning is usually calmer.

Practical tips

Wear closed shoes, because there are steps and uneven ground, and keep away from the cliff edges. There are boat and kayak trips from Lagos that enter the caves; conditions depend on the sea and the operator, so check beforehand.

Nearby

In Lagos you can combine the visit with other places on the blog.

Frequently asked questions

Is it suitable for children? Yes, but take extra care near the cliffs and steps; small children should always be accompanied.

Do I need to book or pay? Conditions can change with the season and the responsible body. Check on site or with the organisation before you go.

Before you go

Check the weather and sea forecast, bring water, sunscreen and suitable footwear, and respect the environment: take your rubbish back and stay on marked paths. That way the visit is more enjoyable for everyone and safer for you and your family.
