Seven Hanging Valleys Trail: a coastal walk from Carvoeiro
The Seven Hanging Valleys Trail is a coastal walk along the cliffs of the Lagoa and Carvoeiro coastline. It runs along the top of the cliffs with constant sea views and passes areas known as Benagil and Praia da Marinha. It is one of the most popular walks in the Algarve and can be done at your own pace.
What to expect
The trail is essentially coastal, with stretches of packed earth, loose stone and some ups and downs. In many places there is little shade, so sun and wind are noticeable. The channel videos show the atmosphere well: cliffs, caves, small beaches and a sea that changes colour through the day.
What to bring
Closed, comfortable shoes, plenty of water, a hat and sunscreen. Avoid the hottest hours of summer: early morning or late afternoon are better. Always keep a safe distance from the cliff edge and stay on the trail.
How long it takes
It depends on the starting point and your pace, but allow a few hours including photo stops. Plan your return, because the trail is linear, and check conditions before setting out.
To round off the day
People who come here often also visit the nearby beaches.
Frequently asked questions
How much time should I allow? For the trail, allow a few hours, depending on the starting point and your pace. Photo stops and breaks can make the visit longer.
Is it suitable for children? Yes, but take extra care near the cliffs and steps; small children should always be accompanied.
Do I need to book or pay? Conditions can change with the season and the responsible body. Check on site or with the organisation before you go.
Before you go
Check the weather and sea forecast, bring water, sunscreen and suitable footwear, and respect the environment: take your rubbish back and stay on marked paths. That way the visit is more enjoyable for everyone and safer for you and your family.
