Faro and Olhão: the Ria Formosa, the old town and the seaside market

Faro is the capital of the Algarve and the region’s gateway for anyone arriving by plane, but it is worth staying longer than a layover: it has a walled old town and is the starting point for the Ria Formosa. A few minutes away, Olhão keeps a more fishing-focused feel.

Faro’s old town

Inside Faro’s walls, entered through the Arco da Vila, stands the cathedral and a pocket of quiet streets, quite different from the bustle of the marina and nearby shopping areas. This is also where the city’s history as the former capital of the kingdom of the Algarve comes through most clearly.

The Olhão market

Olhão has one of the best-known markets in the region, in two cube-shaped buildings by the harbour, with fresh fish, seafood and local produce. The town grew up around fishing and still has an active fleet today, which you can feel in the streets near the Ria.

The Ria Formosa

Boats leave from Faro or Olhão for the barrier islands of the Ria Formosa, such as Culatra Island or Farol Island, with wide sandy beaches and little development. It is a nature reserve, so it is worth checking boat times and protected areas before you go.

Food in the area

The area is known for shellfish farmed in the Ria Formosa itself, such as clams and cockles. Dried octopus, seen hanging on lines near Olhão’s harbour, is another image tied to the region’s fishing tradition.

Getting there and parking

Faro has an international airport and a train station, connected to the whole Algarve line; Olhão is about 10 minutes away by car or train. In both, there are car parks near the old centres and the jetties for the islands.

Best time to visit

Outside summer, the Ria Formosa islands have far fewer people and boats run less full; in summer, it is worth booking trips ahead and arriving at the jetty early.

Where to stay and what to book

Faro and Olhão are good bases thanks to their closeness to the airport and the Ria Formosa islands. To find accommodation and experiences in the region, such as boat trips to the islands, visit Algarve Férias, and to see the ratings of homes and experiences, Algarve Reviews.
